High Sierra Foundation
PHAT Boy Riding has chosen High Sierra
Foundation's Katrina Relief Fund to be the main beneficiary of our Pedal
with Purpose Tour '06. My plan is to raise awareness or should I say to
remind folks that while the devastation from Katrina has dropped from
the headlines there are still many lives that are still displaced as a
result of the damage from the hurricane. There are still many
musicians living in exile from New Orleans. I keep sounding the trumpet
so to speak as I prepare and ride across the country later this summer.
I have already gained support from people like Future Man and Victor
Wooten from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and bands like ALO,
Blue Turtle Seduction
and Blueground Undergrass. My plan is to get as many bands and their
fans to catch the vision of helping the musicians that lost their homes
and possessions and in many cases their instruments.
Music is such a healing force. By
reaching out and helping the musicians return from exile, we can reach
out to the city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region. Let's help
bring back the music to New Orleans.
The
High Sierra Foundation was established in 2003 to raise
awareness and funds for worthwhile organizations related to music,
art, education and social justice. This year one dollar from each
High Sierra Music Festival ticket purchase directly benefited the
High Sierra Foundation. Last year the High Sierra Foundation
established a special fund to give direct aid to those affected by
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and thanks to support from the High
Sierra community we've been able to donate much-needed funds to the
New Orleans music community. Direct aid grants were given to more than
a dozen recipients. The High Sierra Foundation is a tax-exempt
501(c)(3). All donations are tax deductible.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
We Desire to
serve deserving musicians by providing financial assistance in meeting
current living, and medical expenses. Financial help is viewed as an
opportunity to say "Thank You" to those who have given so much to
enhance the quality of musical life in our country.

A big warm thank you to everyone who came out to support the
Katrina Relief Benefit with The Everyone Orchestra on
September 25,2005 at 12 Galaxies in San Francisco. Thanks to your
generosity we raised $10,000 for the High Sierra Foundation
Katrina Relief Fund, which will be given as direct aid to New
Orleans musicians affected by the hurricane.
The first recipient of grant money was Kirk
Joseph, noted tuba and sousaphone player from New Orleans who
lost both his home and favorite horn in the floods. High Sierra
fans might be familiar with Joseph as an original member of the
Dirty Dozen Brass Band and more recently a member of Anders
Osborne's band. He has temporarily relocated to the Bay Area with
his band Kirk Joseph's Backyard Groove and they will be
gigging regularly around town and keeping the New Orleans groove
pumping. Kirk was in attendance for the benefit and added
significant musicianship and purpose to his first Everyone
Orchestra experience. The music was incredible and as you can see
from these photos both performers and audience had a great night.
